Ribbon Organization

I am in my ribbon box almost DAILY and this is what it looks like.  Yikes!

I've seen about a hundred ribbon storage ideas on Pinterest, but not of them feel workable for me.  Like the dowel systems... mine would probably just unravel and end up a big stringy mess.  Have you seen the basket or box with holes and you thread the ribbon through?  Ummmm... not working for me either.  I'd hate to drag the whole box around, plus I'd probably pull too much and spend all day spooling it back on the roll (or not) and it would end up looking like my box up there anyway.

So - here's what I came up with!

{Inspired by my friend Jen and those flat little cardboard spools you store sewing floss/thread on.}

I had some 4x4 chipboard coasters in my craft stash that I've been dying to use and ran to the store to get a package of binder clippies.

Winding the ribbon off the rolls and onto the cards was a tedious task, but I LOVED how I could pair up coordinating ribbon.  This will prove to be super helpful as I quickly scour my box for upcoming projects and should prevent me from buying something I already have.

I didn't wrap all of my ribbon yet - any that were unopened I kept on their rolls for now.  See the row of cards at the top?  That cleared 58 ribbon rolls out of my box!  Notice how those 58 cards now equal the same space as 16 rolls in the next row?!  I'll get to those as I open and use them, but I did store extra cards and clips in my box so I've got the supplies right there to keep myself on top of it.

  2. Ooh! I like it a lot! I especially like that the amount of space required for storage decreases, but the amount you CAN store increases.

  3. Where did you get the spools from? I am looking for some to do my boyfriend's mom's collection of ribbons, and this is a perfect idea.

  9. Love this too! I haven't been too impressed with some of the other ideas I've run across...they just don't work for me...and all the little hands that are constantly unrolling my ribbons! Great idea!

  10. I love it!! I knew you would come up with something brilliant. I was so sad when I couldn't find those cardboard spools anywhere. Great idea to use the chipboard!!

  11. I really should do this. Currently, I have one of those 3-drawer bins on wheels (I'm not sure what they're really called) STUFFED with ribbons. All my smaller lengths are shoved inside ziptop bags etc. It's a mess and even when I need the ribbon, I dread digging through it all.
    Any idea where we'd be able to pick up something similar to the chipboard coasters? Thanks!

  15. Hi Colette, I love how you showed exactly the amount of space the ribbon rolls take compared to the cards. I just wanted to let you know that I linked up your post on mine today! I hope you don't mind :)

  16. Ohhh me cheese!! Your a genius! I so understand you problems with other solutions, they won't work for me either. Probably with the same results as yours. Now I can store my ribbon easily. Thanks!!
